10 weeks of Tier 1 Entrepreneur visa tips – Week 4 - Your business idea must be realistic, not too generic and in-demand in the UK economy.

In Week 1 post we mentioned the importance of the Entrepreneur visa applicant to have relevant skills and experience in the chosen industry. If not their own - then experience of their families or business partners.

Here we consider what kinds of business ideas work and don't work, based on our practice.

A business idea shouldn’t be too generic. For example, another restaurant or a shop is unlikely to work, there is no shortage of them! Importing consumer goods to the UK could be difficult too (mobile phones, clothes etc) unless these particular goods are in great demand. You have more chance to succeed with a specialist type of skills/services, as long as it is in demand by the economy.

Property-related activities are excluded by the Rules (although nothing is stopping you from doing it as a secondary activity, separate from your business for the visa purpose ).

Examples of business ideas that are likely to be successful:

IT services, particularly very specialist ones.

IT services related to the financial industry, such as helping with a software used to facilitate financial transactions.

Creative activities, such as design, advertising, film-making etc. For example, we had a client providing wedding photography and video. We had many designers too!

Manufacturing, as long as the actual production will be based in the UK. It can be a small operation (doesn’t need to be a big factory).

Export of goods produced in the UK. We are often asked about other way around - import of the foreign goods to the UK market - but export of British goods is “better” for this purpose.

Engineering services.

Activities based on science and technology. In our real example, it was nanotechnology.

Activities from the Shortage Occupation List, as long as they are relevant to an Entrepreneur category. There are many activities like doctors and nurses, which would be more relevant for a Tier 2 visa, but some would work as a business, such as video games or dentistry.

Other technology activities. For example, we had a client who designed an app.

Health & beauty services that require specialist skills. For example , another hairdresser’s salon is unlikely to work. However, a salon with high-tech beauty procedures would.

Generally, highly skilled and experienced people are welcome under this category!

Next week – Entrepreneurial (dream) teams.

Fast Schengen visa for Christmas holidays - often without biometrics

Multi Travel Visas, a prominent UK visa company in the City of London, can assist you with Schengen visas to Europe through France or Germany that allow travel to all of the Schengen area. French visas take only 4 working days for most nationals and as an accredited agency, Multi Travel Visas can provide appointments much earlier than public appointments.

You can apply as early as 3 months before date of travel.

If your Schengen visa stamp shows "VIS" and was issued after March 2016, it means that biometric data has already been collected. In such case, within a 5 year period, we can simply apply on your behalf without you having to go in person to a visa centre or a consulate.

We can submit French Business visa applications any day without appointments.

Contact us now: email info@multitravelvisas.co.uk, we reply on the same day! Website: www.multitravelvisas.co.uk with the visa requirements and clients' feedbacks. Phone 0871 472 1468 or 07795471483 or text (calls to 0871 number cost £0.10 per minute).

Fast UK / British passport renewal for Christmas holidays! Submission within 2 working days. Renewal, replacement of lost passport, and a 2nd valid passport for frequent business travellers.

Multi Travel Visas, a prominent UK visa company in the City of London, can assist with renewing a UK passport using fast service at the Passport Office in London, with the authorisation from you as per the government requirements. We can usually submit passport applications within  2 working days.

We can also help if for some reason you are unable to apply yourself. If you don't have time to travel to a Passport Office yourself we can apply on your behalf (you don't have to come to London). If you are living/working abroad you can courier documents to our London office and we can submit them promptly for same-day service. This includes if your passport has run out of pages or if you need to renew not only yours but also/or your child's passport urgently.  Example: British expats living or working in the USA, the Middle East, Asia and Europe.

Passport renewal: we can renew your adult passport on same-day service or 1 week service, with applications submitted as soon as next 1 - 2 working days. You can also ask for a ‘Jumbo’ passport (48 pages instead of the standard 32), handy if you travel frequently outside the UK and your passport is full of stamps – it will take much longer for your passport to run out of pages.

Replacement of a lost or stolen passport: we can submit promptly, as above, but replacements are only processed on 1 week service at the Passport Office.

2nd valid passport for frequent business travellers: this is possible within the timing of normal urgent services, here your employer has to provide a letter confirming you have to travel frequently for work and you need a 2nd passport to travel while your 1st one is used to apply for visas.

Foreign travel visas: Russia (including invitations, ie visa support), China, India, Saudi Arabia, Kazakhstan and others. If you have a British passport but work abroad we can still process a visa application here in London. For example, if you are working abroad far from a capital city in that country, and cannot go to the Embassies, then you could courier your documents to us and we’d submit to the Embassies in the UK.

Contact us now: 0871 472 1468. Email info@multitravelvisas.co.uk , we reply on the same working day! Web-site: http://www.multitravelvisas.co.uk/same-day-british-passport-renewal.php  with the visa requirements and clients' feedbacks. Calls to 0871 number cost £0.10 per minute, emails are free.

Our office is based in the City of London, near Monument station. Also close Bank, Liverpool Street and London Bridge. Within easy reach by DLR from Canary Wharf.

Business plan writing service for a Tier 1 (Entrepreneur) visa - from a firm of experienced Immigration Entrepreneurs!

Business plan is a compulsory requirement for initial Entrepreneur visa applications. Over the past several years we’ve been dealing with the Entrepreneur visa applications for our clients. As a part of each application, we have to read client’s business plan, ask to make changes and generally, to include the information relevant to the Entrepreneur visa rules as well as based on the questions a client may be asked at an interview (from our experience of clients’ visa interviews).

Our experience allowed us to develop an approach to creating the business plans from a Tier 1 Entrepreneur visa point of view. Instead of using standard templates, we focus on what the visa officers want to see, i.e. on what a migrant will be required to do while holding this visa: investment of £50,000 or £200,000 and what your client is going to spend it on. For example, paying yourself a salary is not counted, yet it is very common for clients to do this.

Another example will be including a plan of creating 2 jobs and that they will be for ‘settled’ people. Most business plans we see do not mention these 2 jobs at all, yet it is a common question at a visa interview, so we think it is a good idea to include it and add employer’s National Insurance contributions to the calculation.

We also advise to explain your business idea in simple and plain language. For instance, there is no benefit in adding many technical IT terms because the visa officers are not IT professionals, yet they have to understand your business idea. If you can explain it to us, we can explain to the UK Visas & Immigration. Finally, we advise to treat it like a CV but for a business. Too many CVs contain information designed to make the applicant look ‘clever’, yet fall apart once an interviewer starts asking questions about it. The Home Office staff do read the business plan and may ask questions!

A typical business plan takes 1-2 weeks to prepare but we always try to accommodate clients’ urgent requests and do it as soon as possible.

10 weeks of Tier 1 Entrepreneur visa tips – Week 3 – Raise the funds that will remain available after you secure your visa.

Another day, another request for advice from a client to extend his Entrepreneur visa but ... “there is no money”.  This is a typical scenario – and a cry for help -  we see, which is rapidly becoming very common. A migrant had an initial Entrepreneur visa issued 3 years ago, having provided evidence of £200,000 (often borrowed from their families).
Now, 3 years later, his visa is about to expire and he needs to apply for extension. One of the conditions, however, is that this money had been invested in a UK business. In a typical scenario, we see investment of only a quarter of that amount. The rest of the money isn’t there and often was returned to the family.
Although this concerns a visa extension stage, we would strongly advise to think about this during the initial application. On one hand, it is a part of the Genuine Entrepreneur Test that the funds are “genuinely” available and will continue to be available. The visa officers will be using the balance of probabilities principle. In plain language it means they will be “guessing” , based on your evidence and previous history, whether you are likely to run a business and invest the funds, or whether you are likely to do precisely what they are worried about – obtain a visa, come to the UK and do something else.
On the other hand, 3 years of the initial visa may seem like a long time, but in practice, time goes by very fast, and you will be facing a major problem when trying to extend. The Immigration Rules do not require to invest the funds on equal amounts per year, for example, the rule is to have invested within 3 years. Strictly speaking, it could be the whole amount of £200,000 just one day before applying for extension, but it is unlikely to pass the “genuineness” test.
Our advice – it is better to wait and raise genuine funds and apply for a visa when you are genuinely ready. Once in the UK, to genuinely follow the visa conditions. We covered some of the “genuineness” aspects in the post last week.

10 weeks of Tier 1 Entrepreneur visa tips – Week 2 – It only works if you are a “genuine” applicant / entrepreneur and have “genuine” funds “genuinely” available!

Why do we say “genuine” so many times? It is from the Immigration Rules – Genuine Entrepreneur Test and it is the main reason for refusals in this visa category. Evidence of funds – can be arranged; evidence of English – same; evidence of being “genuine” – now it gets tricky (for you) and makes it easier for the government to refuse your application.
Our advice – be a genuine applicant! May sound obvious but this is the most important thing in the whole application! You have to be a genuine entrepreneur and genuinely intending to come to the UK to run your own business or to join an existing one. Do not use this category “just to come to the UK”, it is fairly obvious to professionals like us (and the Government officers!) when someone is trying to do so.

When we work on an Entrepreneur visa application, we look at least at one of the following (better both):

1)     Does the migrant have past experience of running his/her own business? If the answer is No, maybe at least their family members do? Such as a parent or uncle’s business in their home country.

2)     Does the migrant have past experience in working in the chosen business sector? Very often we see foreign students applying as Entrepreneurs, in which case they have to at least have relevant qualifications.

Here are some examples that work:

A student obtains a UK degree while on a Tier 4 visa, returns to their home country and applies for an Entrepreneur entry visa to set up a business in the sector that he studied and which is connected to his family’s work in the home country. For example, a student obtains an accountancy qualification here and has a parent who is employed as an accountant in their home country. Here most “skilled” business sectors work but generic things, like export/import of clothes or phones, tend to be less successful. A restaurant or a shop are least likely to succeed unless it is a franchise (Subway is very popular).

A variation of the above: a student applies to set up a business in the UK, which is connected to his/her UK degree. They have no family members working in tht field but their family run a different business in their home country. Although there is no connection to the given business sector, the family members’ experience of running a business would be helpful to guide our client with running a business in the UK. The general logic of running a business is the same in any country, the details are different, for which a professional, such as a UK lawyer or accountant, can be hired from the £200,000 investment.

A Tier 2 migrant comes to the UK, works for 2 years in, say, IT sector, then applies for Entrepreneur visa to run a business in the same or similar field, using the business connections that he has built up during the time spent on Tier 2.  Here the previous experience of running a business would not be important.

A foreign entrepreneur has been running a successful business in their home country for several years, can prove it with official tax filings (not cash business), and now wishes to set up the same kind of enterprise in the UK. This usually works well, especially if manufacturing of goods is involved (future manufacturing in the UK) but tends to work better for “skilled” or specialist industries. Again setting up a shop or buying/selling business like at home tends to be risky, although it depends on the case and the applicant.

10 weeks of Tier 1 Entrepreneur visa tips – Week 1 – How much money do I actually need, GBP 200 000 or 50 000?

The main amount is 200 000 British Pounds. The 50 000 applications are only allowed if you have funds from specified sources, and there is an exhaustive list in the Rules and can be found here: https://www.gov.uk/guidance/immigration-rules/immigration-rules-appendix-a-attributes

For example, from a UK Government department or UK-regulated venture capital fund. There are fewer sources for students to “encourage” them to apply from outside the UK.

In addition to the main amount of GBP 200 000, you also need further funds under the Maintenance requirement, which is separate. You can’t use the same money for both.

Next week - be a "genuine" applicant!

It is possible to obtain a French Schengen visa within 3-4 working days from the date of appointment for most nationals, such as South African, Thai, Filipino, Russian, Indian, Chinese and most others. We can also assist with the German and Portuguese Schengen visas.

The good thing about applying through French Embassy is that they tend to issuer longer, multiple-entry, visas. Although you have to go through a very stringent process of application, you may have a visa lasting for several years.

Fast UK / British passport renewal!
