Latest on Brexit: The Guardian article on a leaked document on "tough rules" for EU citizens after Brexit. Our advice remains - apply to confirm your status now !

In this article https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2017/sep/05/leaked-document-reveals-uk-brexit-plan-to-deter-eu-immigrants  The Guardian claimed to have a (leaked) government document, proposing the end of free movement immediately after Brexit and tough new visa rules for European migrants.

Whether this leaked proposal was genuine or not , whether it will be adopted in this form or changed, here are some examples.

For example , European citizens wishing to bring their family members  (husbands , wives and children ) , will have to meet the same Financial Requirement (£18,600) as UK citizens currently have. This income requirement has been controversial ever since its introduction in 2012 and has been subject to a few court cases. However , at least it would make the Rules the same for all. Currently , there is no minimum income requirement for European citizens. Another crucial difference is that European citizens themselves would need a visa (i.e. need to meet certain requirements) and only then could consider bringing their family members to the UK - under yet more requirements on finances and very possibly English language.

Another example is a visa for highly skilled visa for 2 to 5 years which is the same as currently applied to non-EU workers. This is what we have been expecting - extending the current non-EU law rules to EU citizens after Brexit. It includes compulsory advertising of each skilled job to the settled workers first and proving why a foreign worker is needed. Strict requirements to adverts on Universal Match (former Job Centre Plus) and very probing questions from the Home Office when submitting an application for a licence to sponsor foreign workers. At the moment such rules don't apply to EU/EEA workers due to the free movement of labour.

Our advice to the European citizens remains the same: apply to formally confirm your immigration status now!
