What are the English language requirements for UK visas?

Relocating to the United Kingdom offers incredible opportunities for both your career and your family. One of the strongest economies in the world, the UK is home to 6.2 million expats. However, there are several steps involved in obtaining a UK visa. In this article we will explain the English language requirements for UK visas. This includes proving proficiency in the English language.

Work visas

To obtain a work visa for the UK, it will be necessary to have a job offer and be sponsored. Some documents would be requested and they may be translated. Following Brexit, this now also applies to Europeans.

For a work visa, you must prove you can read, write, speak and understand English to B1 level. The level is based on the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) scale. B1 entails being able to understand topics related to work, as well as being able to describe personal views or aspirations.

In order to prove your B1 proficiency in English, a Secure English Language Test (SELT) will be required. Note that you must choose from the list of Home Office approved tests. For example, you could take the IELTS Life Skills test, or equally the GECE.

Family visas

English language requirements for UK visas also apply on a family visa. An English language test is also required. However, the level mandated for entry is A1. This means that you know basic phrases and can understand English at a slow pace. After 2.5 years in the UK, you will have to apply for an extension. At this point, an A2 in English is necessary. Then, after an additional 2.5 years, you will be required to prove B1 English proficiency.

What must I do to pass the Secure English Language Test?

Preparation with specialists

The Home Office English tests are highly specific. Furthermore, the format varies widely from exam to exam. Visa applicants are often mistaken in thinking that a good level of English alone will allow them to pass the exam.

It is highly recommended to undertake English language lessons with a specialist tutor. BiCortex Languages, which provides language lessons to expats and their families, is able to prepare students for all required English tests. Lessons will include advanced grammar, practice tests and tips on achieving the best possible marks. Lessons will also teach specific vocabulary, such as that related to business. With lessons conducted by native speakers, you will learn speaking and writing in the most authentic way possible. If you prefer, you can opt for online lessons, conducted via a bespoke virtual classroom.

English classes are not only important to pass the language tests. Lessons are also important in preparing you for life in the United Kingdom. For children, lessons prior to relocation allows them to settle into school more quickly. As lessons will also include cross-cultural training, they allow business leaders to effectively manage an international team. Businesses attach such value to language training that it is advisable to check whether it is included as part of your company’s HR expatriation policies.

Practice Writing

When conversing, imperfect grammar and turns of phrase are more likely to go unnoticed. When it comes to writing, however, mistakes can be glaring. In addition, the English language tests may pose questions to which you have previously not given much thought. For example, you may be expected to answer whether you agree or disagree that we have become too dependent on automobiles. In order to successfully answer such a question, reasons and examples must be used. Consequently, practice for the writing aspect of the test is paramount. Working with your teacher, you can identify common mistakes in your writing. You can also brainstorm ideas to be prepared for any type of essay question.

Practice in Timed Conditions

Although you may be able to hold an informal conversation, the speaking aspect of the English Language tests can be challenging. You must respond succinctly, directly answering the question, without exceeding the time limit. Reading comprehension questions are equally difficult. Texts are often highly technical and nature. The questions following them are also formatted in a very particular manner. Although you may want to respond slowly, there is a time pressure involved. Lessons with your teacher will therefore assist you in understanding and answering comprehension questions quickly.
